Clean sweep for Silver Ferns against Jamaica

The Silver Ferns completed a clean sweep of the New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy when they outclassed the Jamaican Sunshine Girls 66-38 in the third Test in Rotorua on Sunday.

In her sixth Test of the international season, new coach Janine Southby celebrated her first Series win in the role, guiding the Silver Ferns into a new era while giving all her squad court time.

With the Silver Ferns looking to further cement their combinations, teenage shooter Maia Wilson and defenders Storm Purvis and Phoenix Karaka gained more exposure in their young careers with fourth quarter cameos.

After a positive start from the home team, Jamaica impressed with their patience on attack to make a competitive opening bid. Wing attack Adean Thomas found perfect positioning on the circle edge while the tall frame of Shantal Slater provided a strong target under the hoop.

Slater and her shooting partner Shanice Beckford had a perfect accuracy return to ensure an even first quarter where the teams went to the first break on level terms at 13-all.

It was a different story on the resumption with the Silver Ferns finding their timing and connections with telling effect.

The centre/wing defence combination of Shannon Francois and Laura Langman provided a sterling defensive effort on Jamaica’s first phase play while the impressive in-circle defensive combination of Katrina Grant and Jane Watson continued to shine with the pair pocketing a host of turnover opportunities.

Bailey Mes and Te Paea Selby-Rickit had influential outings under the hoop, outpointing Jamaica by 15 goals as the Silver Ferns romped to a 35-20 lead at the main break.

With Ameliaranne Ekenasio replacing Selby-Rickit at goal attack for the second half, the Silver Ferns continued to build on their overall dominance.

The home team punished Jamaica with their quick attacking transition which the Sunshine Girls struggled to contain. At the other end, Grant and Watson maintained their impressive ability to disrupt and spoil in the Jamaican circle as they picked off numerous aerial intercepts.

With the ball in hand, Slater was an impressive presence with her accurate shooting but lacked enough opportunities to do any real damage as the Silver Ferns employed effective restricting tactics. Jamaica were also not helped by a high turnover count as the home team hit the last break well in control at 50-28.
