Francois One of A Select Few
Only 35 New Zealand Netballers have competed in a Commonwealth Games, so for new recruit Shannon Francois, it’s a dream come true.
“It’s still sinking in and seems a bit surreal. I told my partner first then my Mum, Dad and sister and it was exciting telling them, they were all pretty happy for me.”
“I’m very excited to see what the Commonwealth Games is going to be like, seeing the whole village and the whole aspect of having lots of athletes all in one village.”
“It’s something I’ve grown up watching on television so it’s going to be totally amazing to go.”
Francois is an overachiever having already represented New Zealand in touch and athletics.
“I grew up always wanting to compete at an Olympics, maybe doing something in athletics - that was always a dream. So to be able to go to one of these events like the Commonwealth Games for Netball is amazing.”
“Ever since I got the call from Wai (coach Waimarama Taumaunu) that I was in the team, my parents have been rushing around trying to book flights, get tickets and find some accommodation, and it also sounds like some aunties and uncles will also be there and even grandparents, so they’re all totally thrilled.”
Francois has six test caps to her name and joined the Silver Ferns towards the end of 2013 for the New World Netball Series for the Constellation Cup in Australia and back in New Zealand against Malawi.
With the retirement of Irene van Dyk, the door was left open for a debutant, Ellen Halpenny who Francois says she knows well.
“Ellen and I played in the New Zealand Under 21’s so we’ve had quite a few years together and been to lots of camps so I’m excited that she’s coming along as she’s someone in my age group. We’ve come up through the ranks together so it’s great to have a buddy along with me.”
Francois’ selection into the team was not assured due to the level of competition for the few spots available in the team. After strong, consistent performances for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel throughout the season, Francois is delighted that the hard work over the past few months is paying off.
“At the start of the ANZ Championship we all sat down and chose some goals and I’ve been working really hard towards ticking them off and making sure I nail those because that’s my role as a wing attack,” she said.
“I think things went really well and that connection with Jodi (Brown) in the goal attack position went well so I’ve totally focussed on my goals this year and it’s paying off!”
