Grant: “we want to put out good performances”

Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant believes there’s still a lot her team can improve on ahead of the second Test of the New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy.

The Silver Ferns will face the Jamaican Sunshine Girls on Wednesday night in Palmerston North in front of another capacity crowd, with Grant expecting a tight tussle.

“I think they’ll [Sunshine Girls] look at the scoreline and know that they can build,” Grant said.

“They’ll want to show what they can do; they’ve got players who aren’t on this tour who could come back into this side so they’ll be fighting for spots and wanting to play well.”

A highlight for Grant in their first Test win was the speed the Silver Ferns played with, but she says there’s still plenty of improvements to be made.

“Watching the speed go through the court was very impressive, especially between Laura [Langman] and Grace [Rasmussen] – those two have wheels and they really showed it,” she said.

“There are aspects that we can work on and tidy up – we’re not always going to be able to let the ball go that easily against all teams, so we need to know when to control the game, bring it back and do what we want to do.

“Going into Wednesday night we know what to expect now so we can reign in our mistakes and consolidate what we’re trying to do and build from it.”

For a team that has only been together for four matches, Grant says the aim is to keep building and “put out good performances”.

“We really want to consolidate, we want to be a good side, we want to start well and we want to be a group that enjoys ourselves and challenges ourselves to be better,” Grant said.”

“Like Jamaica, we’ve got young players and players coming back from injury putting pressure on us, but we want to cement our spots in this side.”
