Jamaicans ready to grab their opportunities

The Jamaican Sunshine Girls are one of world Netball’s most exciting teams – and now SilverFans will get to see them in action in the upcoming New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy.

They may be missing two of the game’s best shooters – Jhaniele Fowler-Reid and Romelda Aiken - but Dr Paula Daley-Morris, President of Netball Jamaica says there’s plenty of talent for fans to keep an eye out for.

“Our defensive line-up is basically what we had at Netball World Cup so it’s going to be tough,” Dr Daley-Morris said.

“We have some new players – Rebekah Robinson and Abbygail Linton - these new players; we really want to see them shine in their debut as international netballers.

“We have some returning players - Kerry-Anne Brown, Shamera Sterling and Adean Thomas.

“So basically, we have a number of young ones who are now stepping up. So for us, this is a very important test as we seek to find our new Sunshine Girls.”

The Sunshine Girls haven’t toured New Zealand since 2010, but Dr Daley-Morris says the opportunity to play against the world number two Silver Ferns is important for the development of their programme.

“We’re excited to be here, we haven’t been in a long time. It’s always good coming to New Zealand; we share a good relationship with the Silver Ferns on and off the court,” she said.

“These girls are young, this is our new team that we’re trying to put together and the experience for them will be good.

“We want to remain in the top five in the world and so these opportunities - we grab them, because they are golden to us.

“We appreciate the gesture from Netball New Zealand and the fact that we are able to play the Silver Ferns, outside of a championship year is important for us.”

Fans can catch all the action between the Silver Ferns and the Jamaican Sunshine Girls in the New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy live on SKY Sport NZ.

The first Test will come to you live from the Trafalgar Centre, Nelson, from 7.30pm on Sunday night (check local guides).
