Jury nets her Silver Ferns debut

Kelly Jury – Silver Fern number 166 – is proof that regardless of the setbacks, you can still realise your dream of wearing the Black Dress.

The defender came on in the final quarter at GK in the victory over the England Roses to make her Silver Ferns debut.

With her parents in the crowd at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, Jury said she was still pinching herself.

“It’s a huge honour but it’s still unbelievable, I’m still pinching myself,” Jury said after the match.

“I couldn’t pinpoint an emotion, feeling or thought - my mind was going a million miles an hour - I should have worn my heart rate monitor!”

Jury, who is still eligible for the NZU21 team’s title defence at Netball World Youth Cup Gaborone 2017, admits she hasn’t had the easiest of roads to the Silver Ferns.

“I haven’t taken the easiest road going through injury then missing out on NZSS team. So you kind of go through the stage where you think the world’s going to end because you didn’t make the team,” she said.

“But it just proves that you don’t need to take a set path and there will be some road blocks. It may not be the easiest path but you can get there eventually.”

Rooming with Maria Tutaia (South Africa) and Anna Harrison (Liverpool) has helped Jury settle into the team and tour environment; however she has had one added pressure…

“I’ve had the pressure of doing Maria’s hair!” she said with a laugh.

“The tour has been so much fun and a whole new experience. It has been better than what I thought it would be.

“This has been my first long haul trip so that has been an experience in itself.”

The Silver Ferns next opponent in the Netball Quad Series is South Africa’s SPAR Proteas at Wembley – the match will broadcast live on SKY Sport NZ 2 from 4.15am on Monday morning.
