Purvis debuts in historic Test
A hug from her grandparents after the match topped off an incredible night for newly capped Silver Fern Storm Purvis.
On Sunday night, Purvis became the 162nd player to wear the Black Dress when she came on partway through the final quarter at goal defence in the Silver Ferns’ 72-34 victory over the Jamaican Sunshine Girls.
“It was amazing!” Purvis said after the match.
“I was just saying to everyone it was the quickest six minutes of my life.
“It was a super cool feeling and I’m really proud.”
Purvis admits she was surprised to go in the last quarter, but she was excited to share the moment with her family, team-mates and the sold out Nelson crowd.
“Being a Silver Fern has been my dream for as long as I can remember - it has been an amazing night,” she said.
“I’ve got family from the Marlborough region so it’s cool to be here and to debut.
“My grandparents were here which was great. I think one of them may have shed a wee tear, but it was great to get a big hug from them after the game.”
Purvis is looking forward to the remaining two Test of the New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy.
“To come away with the win is exciting, so now it’s about pushing on, maybe trying some new things and seeing what we can do out there,” Purvis said.
“The overall vibe and feeling that we have as a group is amazing. I’m really stoked to be in such a good group.”
