Selby-Rickit ready for the challenge

Te Paea Selby-Rickit is no stranger to tough sporting contests. But she knows when she pulls on the Black Dress for the first time in her Silver Ferns debut, it’ll go to another level.

One of three debutants selected in coach Janine Southby’s Netball Quad Series team, Selby-Rickit follows in the footsteps of her older sister, Te Huinga (Silver Fern #153), who played two Tests in 2013.

“It was a bit of a surprise, but a huge honour and I’m really happy,” Selby-Rickit said of her selection.

“I’ve wanted to be in this position since I was a little girl so I’m really happy to finally be here.”

Growing up, Selby-Rickit admired the court craft of Donna Wilkins and Belinda Colling – two of New Zealand’s best goal attacks of the era.

Now, she may get the opportunity to wear the GA bib if called upon in the Netball Quad Series.

“It’s an honour; anything with the Silver Fern on it is obviously a huge honour and watching the Olympics has been really inspiring,” she said.

“I think it’ll sink in once I’m standing on court in our dresses, singing the national anthem with the girls.

“I can’t wait – I’m really excited!”
