Sinclair becomes Silver Fern #165
January 29, 2017
In the early hours of Sunday morning, a young girl from Rotorua who had a lifelong dream of pulling on the Black Dress became Silver Fern #165.
Sam Sinclair got the nod to start at wing defence in the Silver Ferns opening Test of the Netball Quad Series against the Australian Diamonds.
While the result was not what they wanted, Sinclair said it would be a moment she would always remember.
“I feel very privileged to be in this position and so lucky that I got to take the court alongside some amazing Silver Ferns,” Sinclair said after the match.
“I was nervous initially; a buddle of nerves and excitement.
“I got very emotional during the anthem; a bit choked up. It was very humbling and just an amazing experience – I sung my heart out!”
On her way to becoming Silver Fern #165, Sam Sinclair also became the fifth Rotorua-born Silver Fern.
“It [Test Match] was a massive step-up; a lot tougher. I’ve played those girls before, but when there’s a whole team of them together it’s next level,” she said.
“I think I challenged well and didn’t let things come easy.
“I definitely need to work on picking up more ball and working harder within the defensive unit to create more opportunities.”
Sinclair’s parents, while not in the crowd for her debut, will be making the trip to England and Wales to watch the second half of the tour
“They will be very, very proud – unbelievably proud,” Sinclair said.
“I’m so excited that they’re coming to the UK matches.
“I’m sure dad would have had some tears in his eyes during the anthem.”
The Silver Ferns will travel to Liverpool today where they will begin preparations for their second Test in the Netball Quad Series against the England Roses on Friday. SilverFans can catch the match live on SKY Sport NZ 2 from 8.30am (NZT).
