Souness: “I’ve never felt my heart beat that fast”
Whitney Souness – Silver Fern number 167 – joins a long list of classy wing attacks to make her debut in the Black Dress.
Coming on at the start of the third quarter, Souness became just the 15th Silver Fern to debut against South Africa – the last one being Bailey Mes in 2012.
“It feels awesome - an unreal experience being able to play. I’m just really happy and excited,” Souness said after the match.
Souness admits to having a few nerves when she walked out on court, but to SilverFans watching her debut, the crafty midcourter didn’t look out of place when she sent her first feed into the circle.
“At half-time in the team huddle Janine came up to me and said I was going on. I was kind of shocked but excited,” she said.
“I wasn’t nervous when she told me, but when I walked out and started warming up I was really nervous. I’ve never felt my heart beat that fast before!”
Souness hopes this is the first of many Test Caps for New Zealand.
“It means everything and that was just the start of the journey,” Souness said.
“I thought of my family back home and doing it for them - it was unreal.”
