Test Match Fever Hits Invercargill
The Silver Ferns and Australian Diamonds have arrived in Invercargill ahead of Thursday nights’ much anticipated opening test match of the Constellation Cup at ILT Stadium Southland.
The Diamonds flew into Queenstown and bussed into Invercargill on Sunday night, while the Silver Ferns flew in from various cities around New Zealand early Monday morning. Both teams will continue through rigorous training sessions in the lead-up to Thursday’s test match.
The Silver Ferns have won the Constellation Cup only once in the competition’s four year history in 2012, with Australia taking it out in 2010, 2011 and most recently in 2013 where they won 4-1 after the two teams’ contested five test matches.
Netball New Zealand national selectors named a squad of 19 players after a week of trials earlier this month, with the selectors then choosing a team of 12 to contest the Constellation Cup. The squad members who missed the team selection are in Auckland playing for their Netball Centre teams at the Lion Foundation Netball Champs.
The Constellation Cup as part of the New World Netball Series is the first time the two teams have met since the Commonwealth Games gold medal match in Glasgow. For more information on the New World Netball Series for the Constellation Cup, please click here.
