Watson shines on debut

Jane Watson has become Silver Fern #160 following her international debut against the England Roses at Vector Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The 26 year-old defender, came on in the second half at GK and, partnering captain Katrina Grant, shone in defence further limiting the Roses’ scoring opportunities.

“It was really awesome being out there,” Watson said.

“I was very happy I didn’t stuff it up; I thought I did ok.

“It was amazing – the crowd, the atmosphere – such a great feeling.”

The Auckland crowd erupted when Watson took the court at the start of the third quarter and cheered every time she touched the ball.

Finishing the game with nine gains, three intercepts, one deflection and four rebounds, Watson didn’t look out of place in the line-up, having only received the call-up on Friday to replace to injured Anna Harrison.

“It has been a full-on week with NZA and then getting the call-up,” she said.

“It is an honour to be here and to have the opportunity – I’m rapt.

“I feel like I’ve developed a lot as a player and as a person throughout my five seasons in the ANZ Championship, now it’s a matter of taking any opportunities and making the most of them.

“Not many people get the opportunity to represent the Silver Ferns, so I’m very proud.”
