The Team Behind the Team – Steve Lancaster
July 21, 2015
Whenever the Silver Ferns step on court, there is a group of highly experienced professionals who support them every step of the way.
These people are the team behind the team.
Today we catch up with Netball New Zealand Head of High Performance, Steve Lancaster.
SF: How did you come to be Head of High Performance at NNZ?
Steve: My background is primarily in rugby. I played for the Crusaders and was the franchise’s High Performance Leader from 2006-2012. After two years as High Performance Manager with Rugby Canada overseeing both men’s and women’s national programs I returned to take up this role at Netball New Zealand (NNZ).
SF: What is your role at the Netball World Cup (NWC)?
Steve: My role as Head of High Performance is to ensure the Silver Ferns have all the available resources and support necessary to execute their plan to win the NWC this year.
Joining NNZ late in the World Cup cycle, it has been pleasing to see the planning and preparation that has gone into this campaign. The team is surrounded by top notch practitioners in all areas so the best thing I can do is support them in the execution of that plan.
SF: What are some of the things that go on in the background (in preparation for a NWC) that people wouldn’t necessarily know about?
Steve: I think people would be surprised at the extent of planning that goes into a campaign like the NWC. There is a very detailed campaign plan and Silver Ferns management team meet face-to-face on a monthly basis to review progress against the plan. There is an incredible amount of planning, monitoring and reviewing that goes into ensuring that once the team is selected no stone is left unturned to ensure we have every chance of being successful.
