Versatile defender Belinda Charteris followed in her mother, Judy’s footsteps when making her Silver Ferns debut in 1994 against Australia.
Part of a fresh, young team heralding a new era, the lanky and athletic Charteris could cover all three defensive positions but mainly called goal defence home.
Extremely quick and nimble, she played for both Canterbury (her home city) and Otago, and excelled in her court coverage. Speed, anticipation and a long reach made her an expert in snaffling intercepts while also providing drive through court.
Her long limbs were a useful and disruptive influence under the hoop and she was also strong in the air.
Charteris played in the 1995 and 1999 Netball World Cups and at the 1998 Commonwealth Games where Netball was on the programme officially for the first time. She was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit (NZOM) for her services to Netball in 2009.
