Ellen Halpenny

2014 - 2015

GS
GA
A shift north to play for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ Championship in 2013 paid dividends for talented Canterbury shooter Ellen Halpenny.

A foundation player in the ANZ Championship for the Tactix, Halpenny’s talent was recognised early when she spent five years in the NZ U21 squad (2007-11) and subsequently the Silver Ferns Development Squad.

A versatile attacking player who can interchange between goal attack and goal shooter with ease, Halpenny attracted the eye of the selectors with her tenacity, improved work rate and successful shooting returns.

She was the only new cap named in the New Zealand team to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and coped admirably when almost immediately thrust into the starting line-up following injuries to the more experienced Cathrine Tuivaiti (nee Latu) and Maria Tutaia.

Halpenny was also part of the Silver Ferns historic tour to Fiji in early 2015 when they played two Tests against the hosts and one against Samoa.
