An exceptional natural talent, Wellington shooter Leilani Read made her debut for the Silver Ferns as a 19-year-old in 1993 against Namibia in Palmerston North.
Able to play both shooting positions with equal presence Read had real flair. A powerful player with great ball skills and explosive movement, she was without peer in the air.
Read played for Samoa at the 1995 Netball World Cup before recommitting to the Silver Ferns in 1996.
A rare talent, Read’s enormous potential was never fulfilled following her untimely death from a rare blood disease at just 25 in 1999.
