Plucked out of fourth grade while playing for West Auckland at the National Tournament, powerfully-built in-circle defender Linda Vagana went on to forge an impressive Silver Ferns career.
Becoming a North Harbour stalwart, Vagana, possessed exceptional footwork, had a great standing jumping, an instinct for understanding defensive strategies and being ahead of the play with her ability to take intercepts.
A great team player, Vagana, who operated mainly from goal keeper, made her debut for the Silver Ferns in 1993, missing selection the following year but becoming a regular from 1995-2002.
She collected three silver medals with the Silver Ferns at major events, the 1999 Netball World Cup, and 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games.
She captained Samoa, her country of heritage, at the 2003 Netball World Cup before retiring in 2004.
Vagana was awarded a NZ Order of Merit (NZOM) for her services to Netball in 2003.
