A graceful and often under-rated defender, Wellington’s Lorraine Mair was selected for the Silver Ferns 1970-71 team for the two-month overseas tour ahead of the third Netball World Cup in Jamaica.
Unassuming and unobtrusive, Mair, however, was anything but when on the job, her eye being on the intercept and the ball constantly.
By quietly going about her business on court and focussing totally on the ball, Mair always picked up a bounty of turnover opportunities for her team.
Not a flashy player, Mair was renowned for her consistent and hard-working play from the goal keeper position.
