Unassuming Wellington goalkeeper Marilyn (Millie) Munro was a stalwart of the Silver Ferns for six years after making her debut on the 1974 tour to England.

Munro brought a new dimension to the previously perceived unglamorous custodian’s position, in the process forming a dynamic in-circle defensive pairing with another newcomer Yvonne Willering.

Shy and unobtrusive, Munro was an excellent exponent of the tight-marking goal keeper’s role, covering anything that was loose in front of her while keeping a tight rein on her opponent.

As the last line of defence, Munro was not particularly tall but an excellent reader of play with the ability to come from nowhere to pick off an intercept. She was also a strong rebounder.

Part of the Silver Ferns team which finished third at the 1975 Netball World Cup, Munro played in a hard-fought two-Test home series against Trinidad & Tobago in 1978. The Silver Ferns won the decider by a solitary goal after the First Test had resulted in a draw.

Munro helped the Silver Ferns complete a three-way share of the 1979 Netball World Cup held in Trinidad & Tobago while also featuring in the next national teams selected in 1981 and 82 where they completed a hectic schedule of events in New Zealand, England and Australia.
