Well known for her tight marking without giving away obstruction penalties, Otago and Canterbury defender Shirley Annan joined a strong defensive unit when selected in the 1960 team.

The 1.79m Annan was equally adept at both wing and goal defence, her individual flair ensuring she more than held her own against any opposition. She made her debut against Australia as a 19-year-old.
