A dominant character on the court, the towering Tanya Dearns brought a new dimension to the goal keeper’s role when first selected for the Silver Ferns in 1990.
Playing out of Wellington, Dearns was an imposing presence and used that to great effect.
An intelligent player, she introduced a defensive style that attacked the shooter’s space, in the process creating a position of comfort before pouncing.
Her physical presence made it hard for opponents to get around her, she was very good at anticipating what the opposition wanted to do, had super quick hands and an astute understanding of attacking angles.
Her first stint in the Silver Ferns included the 1990 Commonwealth Games Demonstration Match, the 1991 Netball World Cup and 1993 World Games in The Netherlands, before returning to the fold in 1996.
